"I'm sorry to hear that," said Brianna. She didn't know what it felt like yet, but she could only imagine if one of her parents go away...it would hurt a lot. What more if two of them was away? She didn't want to think anything about it anymore. "But I'm glad that you and your sister turned out all right. Both of you must be strong."
Brianna's eyes widened. "I..." She slowly swam away from Charlie a little. "I can't talk to you then..." she said, her voice fading as she drifted a bit further.

"I see. So you won't talk to me because I'm friends with a King? That's really lame, Brianna. Really lame. He goes to our school too. I didn't realise you were like that," Charlie said, getting out of the pool.
"You know, you're just like everyone else. Everyone else, as soon as I mention him, get's all weird. So much for not judging books by their covers!" Charlie said, walking over to his stuff.

Brianna looked at Charlie sadly. "You don't understand," she said quietly. She looked just as upset as Charlie did. "It's not about Randy...it's about his father." Her voice quivered a bit, indicating that she was thinking about something rather bitter. "My dad works for Mr. Glare and you know how those two clash. My Dad...he could get fired if somehow Blaine Glare finds out I'm talking with one of King's allies."
Brianna swam to the edge of the pool and held onto it. "Sometimes I just wish Dad would quit his job," she added, a tone of truth in her voice as she said it.

"How's he going to find out? Huh? We go to the same school. It's pretty likely we will bump into each other. This stupid rivalry is stopping anyone from becoming friends, and if you're going to stick by that, I don't think I can talk to you either," Charlie said, shaking his head.
"Yeah, well I wish he did to. So that then maybe, you'll actually talk to me properly," Charlie said, wrapping a towel around himself.

Brianna got out of the pool. "There are some things you just won't understand," she said in a low voice. Apparently, although Charlie has seen many things that Brianna hadn't...Charlie didn't see what it was like to be living under the spell of the Glare family. It was one thing she vowed to get out off, even if it takes her away from the home she has come to know.
Her eyes shifted from her things to Charlie then back to her things as she grabbed her own towel. "As much as I want to, Charlie," she said quietly just as she has spoken to him before, "I just can't...and neither can my sister."

"Oh, I don't understand? Don't I? I see what it's like everyday. I see this stupid rivalry everyday. People ignore me because I'm friend with a King, because I'm staying with them. They took me and my sister in, when we had no where else to go. For that, I will be incrediably grateful," Charlie said, picking up his clothes.
"Fine. Fine, Brianna. If you want things that way, I won't talk to you again. You or your sister," Charlie said, looking her straight in the eyes.

Brianna wanted to tell him everything that was inside her...that he was right...that this had to stop...that this didn't have to do anything with them. But as she ran her hand through the back of her head, it reminded her of the things her father did to her every time she put his job at risk. To her and to her sister, but she couldn't tell Charlie that. It was so pathetic. But her eyes, anyone could see that her eyes told a different story...an opposite to what she said.
"Okay, that's the way it has to be."

"You know, I don't want it to be like this, don't you? I want to speak to you, and I know you do too. I can see it. Why can't you? What happens if you do, Brianna?" Charlie asked, stepping towards her.

Brianna shook her head. There was nothing she could do about it. Nothing yet, but when time comes, she'll have to do something about it. But for now, she knew that she had to wait for something to come by her way first, an opportunity. She was impatient, but there was nothing she could do about it yet.
"Nothing," she answered. She looked up at Charlie. "Just remember that Randy isn't a bad guy. I know him. I've seen him around. And I think it's great that you're friends with the guy."

"I know he's a good guy. I'm always hanging around with him. He's great fun and he's always happy. It's just a shame that everything in this town relies on names," Charlie said, shaking his head.
