Jessica stumbled up to the garage, tears still running down her cheeks. She walked through the garage and sat down in the corner, pulling her knees up to her chest. It was times like these that she wished she had a mother. The King's were nice, but, they didn't have the motherly feeling about them. That's what Jessica needed. She needed a mother.
She folded her arms, putting her head on her arms as the tears ran. She wanted her mother. She would do anything if she could have her just this once. Of all the times, she needed her now. To tell her it would be ok, to hold her, to make her feel better.
"I need you, Mom," she whispered, her words choked with sobs.

Terrence had been making the rounds when he spotted Jessica run over to her usual spot. At this time of day, he knew that the Edwards kids wouldn't be around, especially since it was just the start of summer. Even Randy didn't want to stick around to help. The moment Jessica entered the garage was the moment Terrence knew that there was indeed something wrong.
"Jessica," he said softly as he walked over to the young lady. "Everything all right there?" Terrence knew Jessica and Charlie as if they were his own children, and he could always tell if there was something wrong just with one look.

Jessica heard Terrence's voice nearby. She looked up at him and shook her head. She could still feel the tears running down her face. She put her head back down on her arms, still crying. She wanted to stop crying, but she just couldn't.
"I want my Mom," she whsipered, sobbing. She didn't want her boss and her carer to see her like this, but she couldn't do this anymore. She didn't care. She wanted her mother and she didn't care who knew.

Terrence sat on the stool nearby. "I know how that feels," he said calmly. "Sometimes I want my own mom too, just so you know. They always seem to have the answers ready for your question...and have a magic way to make everything seem all right when it's not." Of course Terrence had a mother too once, and he knew the feeling of being held in her arms...He thought of Jessica and he would trade this moment and the other moments he and the girl had together for her to see her mother again. But the past can never be changed.
"Want to talk about it though?" Terrence asked, offering some consolation to her.

Jessica continued to sob, listening to him talk. She took deep breaths, trying to stop herself from crying. She moved self-conciously closer to Terrence, resting her head against his leg. She wiped her eyes, slowly breathing to try and stop her crying.
"I...I met this guy, and it was...was going great...then I had some...some soda and I got...got hyper and then I...I told him I liked him...really liked him...and he said nothing back...so I left..." Jessica said, sobbing.

Terrence gently placed his hand on Jessica's head, trying to soothe the sorrow out of her. "He'll come around, Jessica," he assured the young lady, once being a teenage boy himself. He could only imagine the shock on the boy. "It takes time to proccess. May I remind you the particularly the male species are kind of slow like this," he said, smiling a bit. "You're a great girl, Jess, and if he doesn't see that, he's not the one for you."
Terrence stopped a bit before saying. "May I know who this young man is?" he asked.

"No one's the one for me...I mess everything up...Even Charlie's life..." Jessica said, sobbing less but still crying. "I don't think he even...thought of me that way...but he said he liked...being with me..." Jessica bit her lip, trying to stop the crying.
"Cole...Cole Ryder...I met him at...the arcade..." Jessica said, breathing deeply and slowly.

Terrence sighed. He knew what it was like to be in love, most especially with teenage love. He has been there, he has done that. Sooner or later his son would have to go through the same thing too...and Charlie. But while Jessica was here, he had to deal with her first, tell her everything he knew about it. It was time she learned that love was something that is kind of out of her control.
"It's not that, Jess, trust me," said Terrence. "Someone is out there waiting for you to come into their life. Trust me, Jessica. Don't be impatient. And don't say that you ruin Charlie's life. Everything you've done for that boy is more than enough and I don't see any reason why he shouldn't see that." Terrence stroked Jessica's hair as gently as he could. Somehow, it was a good thing he had Jessica. He didn't have a daughter himself and Jessica was the closest a daughter could get.
Terrence smiled. "Archie's boy? The duplicating kid?" he asked. He had seen the boy once or twice and he knew Archibald Ryder quite well. "If Cole is as much as his father was, he would surely see the good in you. Just give it time. Just be careful, Jess," he warned. Although he liked the boy, the way he got good grades and was known throughout the city because of his skills, the kid had a reputation for being a playboy.

Jessica rubbed her eyes, the tears no longer falling, but she didn't feel much better. She did feel a little better, thanks to Terrence, but she wanted her mother still, even though she knew she couldn't have her. She wanted the warmth, to be held by her, to feel safe. Terrence, he was great, he was like a father to her, but he wasn't her mother.
"Yeah, he can duplicate himself. He showed me. Said he could create 100 of himself. And I showed him mine. I moved the steering wheel on some game. I shouldn't of gone with Charlie to the arcade. I should of stayed here and worked. Then I wouldn't of met him. It was going so well, and then I got hyper and everything came out!" Jessica exclaimed, burying her head behind her hair.

Terrence understood the feeling. He wouldn't forget his own longings of course. And Jessica needed a mother after trying to be one for Charlie for as long as the siblings could remember. It seemed impossible in the past, but after so many years, she has managed it. Terrence could never be more proud of this girl, or her brother. They were both strong, they were both the kind of children their parents could surely be proud of.
"I see Charlie's up to his old antics, trying to convince you to try new things," said Terrence, smiling now. "It's time to stop crying and start hoping. Cole would surely come around, Jess. You'll see. I just want you to keep guarding that heart of yours, all right, Jess?" he said.
