It was far too boring to be stuck at home on his first day of summer. Cole had been thinking about enrolling in summer school for a while now, but he hadn't really gotten himself to drop by the school to do so yet. He instead went to the place where his mother told him not to...but of course being so bored that he was, Cole still decided to go.
Edge Arcade is not for smart boys like you, Cole. Cole thought of his mother's voice. He usually listened, but this time, everything was different, especially when he wanted to get his mind off of his house even for a while. He slipped past the front gate and later found himself in the arcades.
"Yeah, the new game is out!" he muttered to himself when he found the new racing machine he had been waiting for the whole year. He dug his pocket for some quarters so that he could go ahead and play with it.

Jessica sighed as she was pulled along by her younger brother. She was 16 and her 14 year old brother controlled what she did. He was determined to drag her to this arcade. She didn't like arcades. She hated games.
"Come on, Jess! You'll enjoy it. All my friends said it's the best place ever!" Charlie said excitedly, pulling her into the arcade. She was immediately hit by loud music and noises from the machines. She sighed and leaned against the wall, while Charlie ran off and started messing about with the machines.
Jessica titled her head back against the wall, closing her eyes. She sighed contentedly, focusing all her energy into blocking out the noise so she could think. She hadn't really had the chance with school and everything.

Cole was about to put in his quarter when he heard a younger boy's small voice. He stopped and turned around to see Jessica. He was familiar with her face since they went to the same school, but he never really got around to talk to her.
He then took a deep breath and decided to do what he hasn't done before. He walked up to a girl...
"Hey there," he said with an eased smile as he neared Jessica and her younger brother. He smiled a bit at the younger boy. Charlie reminded him of himself when he was about that age. "Babysitting?" Cole asked.

Jessica was snapped back into reality by a voice near her. She blinked and looked at the owner of a voice. Someone was talking to her? Out of choice? That was new.
Charlie grinned back at the older boy, then ran off, leaving Jessica alone with the boy. Jessica watched him run off then turned back to the boy.
"Uh, yes, babysitting," Jessica murmured, agreeing with him. She wasn't exactly babysitting though. She was being his parent. That's what she had been doing for 14 years. No one else around to do it.
"So, are you here alone?"

Cole watched as Charlie ran off. Yeah, it was a small picture of him...except that he had his mother keeping an eye of him as if he was still a little kid. He knew how much she hated him playing in the arcade. According to her, it was a big waste of time and money. But Cole knew better. It was just to keep him away from the "bad influences" his mother thought hung about in the arcades.
Cole the realized he was drifting away to his own thoughts again. "I'm sorry," he said. It must have been weird with him staring at Charlie instead of the beauty that was right in front of him. Cole smiled at Jessica. "I was thinking about something. Anyway, yeah, pretty much alone," he replied.
After a quick glance at the game Cole wanted to play on, he turned back to Jessica. "From the looks of it, you don't come here much too often," he pointed out.

"Don't worry. I drift off a lot too," Jessica said softly, noticing the far away look he had when he was thinking. She had seen that look before, but it was normally on her. Her and Charlie. Charlie had that look a few times.
Jessica watched him looking at Charlie, like he was seeing something that had happened to him before. Like he was looking at himself, she soon realized. He saw himself in Charlie, it seemed.
"No, we don't. I've never come in here before. I don't really play games. Actually, I've never played a game," Jessica admitted, fiddling with the end of her hair. A habit she picked up when she was nervous or embarrassed.

"For real?" Cole asked. It was hard to imagine that there was someone out there who has never played a game before. It was something he did all his life and there was no way he could skip a year without getting his hands on one of the machines around the arcade.
Cole thought for a moment before speaking again. "Hey, I have an idea," he started. "There's this new game you can play. It's the one I've been waiting for all year long. I promise you, it would be a cool start," he urged Jessica. He still couldn't imagine after all these years there was still a person virgin to playing arcade games.

"I..." Jessica began, not really sure what to say to that. Maybe it would be ok to play a game. Everyone else has played one, including Charlie. Maybe it was time she did.
"I... Ok, yes. I will have a go," Jessica finally decided. "Only if you help me out. I have no idea how to play one of these games." Jessica looked up at him with a helpless expression.

Cole chuckled. "After running away from my Mom just to come here, I'm sure I can teach you a trick or two," he said as he led Jessica to the car racing machine. "Maybe even more," he added as he bent over to place a quarter into the slot. He stepped aside in order to let Jessica go ahead. "Take a seat," he said nicely to her.
Cole pressed a couple of buttons and chose a good car for her...and in automatic mode too so Jessica wouldn't have to worry about the stick shift. "I hope you don't mind...I went ahead and chose the car and the gear for you," he explained.

"Of course I don't mind. You know what you are doing. I haven't got a clue," Jessica said, watching him choose different things on the game. She knew if she even tried to do that, she'd end up doing something wrong.
Jessica slid into the seat, taking hold of the steering wheel and looked at him with a scared expression. She had to admit, she was really nervous. She knew it was only a game, but she was still worried.
