"No need to be sorry about anything," Cole assured her. "That happens to everybody." Cole grinned as he went over to pick it up. he tossed the puck back onto the table and hit it once again, with the lightest he can manage. "Let's give it another try," he said.
Cole's eyes followed the movement of the puck as it slowly reached the other end of the table where Jessica was standing. It may not have been the most exciting game he had played, but it was sure worth the time.

"Ok, right, let's try again and not hit it off the table this time?" Jessica said, hitting it back to him and managing to keep it on the table this time. "Not off the table this time!"
Jessica smiled at him. She knew she was probably looking like an absolute idiot, hitting it off the table, but, now she realised what was supposed to happen, she could actually stop looking like an idiot.
Charlie walked over to Jessica, standing next to her. "Jess, I'm going to go for a swim. I'll see you later. I'll be fine, I promise," Charlie said, running out of the door.
"Oh, uh, ok," Jessica murmured, watching him run out of the door.

Cole glanced at Jessica then at Charlie before glancing once again back to Jessica. "Are you sure you're going to let him off the hook that easily?" he asked.
It might have been because Cole was guilty that he might have gotten Jessica's attention away from Charlie, or that he himself had a younger brother who he wanted to watch all the way until college graduation...either way he knew Jessica must have been having second thoughts about this.
"I...I can understand if you'd go with Charlie," said Cole as he looked at Jessica.

"I...Yes, I'm going to let him go. You were right. I don't need to watch him constantly. I trust him enough to look after himself," Jessica said softly, looking at the door for a few minutes, then looking back at Cole.
"I'm staying here. With you. Charlie...Charlie can look after himself. He's 14. I was younger than him when I did things alone," Jessica said, giving him a small smile. "I'm staying here with you."

Cole smiled. He knew how this was a big deal to Jessica, and how it was as much of a big deal to her younger brother. If there was something in between them, it ought to be that they ought to have enough trust with each other to keep their closeness going. That much Cole knew about family...if only he knew that earlier in life then maybe things with his brother and parents would not have been the same.
"It's great of you to do that," said Cole softly as he looked at Jessica. He hit the puck back to her, but just as softly as he first did. "I hope Charlie knows how great of a sister he has." Cole's eyes sparkled. "And I know that I know I'm lucky to have met you today."

"I know he does, and I'm glad I have him as a brother. I'm lucky that I have my powers, or else I'd have no one left," Jessica said, hitting the puck back to him a little harder than he did. She wished she knew if someone else of her family was out there. Anyone. But, there wasn't anyone.
Jessica blushed when he said that, instinctively fiddling with her hair, her other hand on the white circle. "And I'm lucky to have met you too. This is all down to Charlie. If he hadn't of insisted I come, then we wouldn't have had this."

Cole nodded. He knew what it was like to have a family, to want to have a family. He had been longing for the same thing since his mother and father split, but he knew he was better off than Jessica who didn't really have anyone left except her brother. Cole assumed that he was in a better situation, as far as he could see it. But he wasn't about to feel sorry for Jessica. There was nothing to feel sorry for. At least now Jessica knew how to survive on her own, something that Cole had a long way to learn.
"You might find someone one day," said Cole quietly, pushing the puck back to Jessica. "My dad once said that, there's no use dwelling on the past, but there's always something in the future. You might not have your parents right now, but soon enough you'll still find the right family for you," Cole assured the girl.
Cole smiled. "Yeah, I guess I have to thank Charlie for this when he comes back," he commented. Oh, he was thankful all right. Besides, he wanted to get to know the boy too.

Jessica gave him a small smile. "Yes, I'll have something in the future. Make a family of my own. Then I'll have one, won't I?" She gave a small laugh, knowing she was far from thinking that far ahead. She was still only thinking one day through at a time.
Jessica hit the puck back to him, still holding a small smile on her face. "I'm sure he would be grateful for your thanks. I'm very thankful to him," Jessica said, smiling genuinely.

Cole licked his upper lip as he hit the puck once more, this time a little harder than the previous hits he did. "Well, yeah. But that's too far along the way, for me. I'd rather think of today for a while, while I'm still a kid and not paying taxes and stuff. Watching my dad sometimes makes me want to stay a bachelor." He then looked up at Jessica. "But I won't mind getting a girl," he added.
Cole laughed as he watched the puck slide alone the table. "Hey, you think we could hang out some time again after this?" he asked. "Well, if you and Charlie need a break from each other or something," he added, knowing that the both of them were almost always together from the way he saw things.

Jessica hit the puck back to him just as hard. "That's exactly what I do. I worry about tomorrow, rather than in a few years. I take each day as it comes. It's better to do that. Means you don't worry so much about the future. And, I...I wouldn't mind either," Jessica said, feeling her cheeks warming up.
"Yes, sure! I would love to hang out again sometime!" Jessica said quickly, then gasped, realizing she had pretty much blurted that out. She blushed even more. She was really embarrassing herself in front of him.
